Job Purpose
The position holder is responsible for providing quality nursing care provided in the various units of the hospital. He/she also shoulders the responsibility of the general administration of the respective units. The position holder is accountable and responsible for planning, directing and evaluating nursing activities of the wards, including implementation of the department's philosophy and goals, standards for nursing practice and the management and development of nursing personnel. He/she must provide leadership and direction to all nurses working in the ward.
Minimum Requirements
The following qualifications or equivalents are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job.
Education and formal Training:
Current licensure as a RN in facility state.
Current CPR required and ACLS is preferred.
Requires CCA Oncology Training Programme at first available class.
Work Experience:
Minimum 7 + years of experience with
Five to Eight (5-8) years other speciality or Critical care
One (1) year Oncology Nursing. (Optional as per the area of exposure)
Experience in professional development and nursing leadership
Knowledge, skills, and Abilities Required:
Demonstrated verbal, written skills and positive interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated effective organizational, teaching and leadership skills.
Knowledge of the age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual needs of the patients served.
Visual and auditory acuity for accurate patient assessment.
Working knowledge and consistent use of personal protective equipment.
Physical Requirements:
Work requires long periods of standing, walking, or sitting and occasional assistance with heavy lifting.
May be required to work variable shifts or weekends on occasion.
Age of Patients Served: Paediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric
Responsibilities
The following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor that are not listed below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time.

Clinical Practice: Independently performs nursing process -assesses the patient and identifies evidence-based nursing diagnosis; determines plan of care with patient input, organizes, implements, and evaluates care provided and outcomes achieved; demonstrates continuous skill and knowledge base development. Assesses patient’s nutritional status. Provides nursing care as required by the patients in the clinic including fundamental patient care, comfort measures, emergency procedures, medication administration, and other nursing functions needed to ensure patient comfort and safety. Teaches patients/family ranging from paediatrics to geriatrics, about their disease, its treatment, and ways to minimize treatment side effects. Provides emotional support to patients and families. Assists physicians during patient exams and procedures performed in the clinic. Assists in coordinating the scheduling of patient consultations, procedures, simulations, and follow-up visits. Monitors equipment maintenance logs (e.g., Department stock, crash cart, refrigerator, temperature logs etc.).
Safety: Provides a safe physical and emotional environment for self, co-workers, and patients; safely administers medications; recognizes side effects, life threatening situations and responds appropriately; manages drug inventory and expirations dates of medication and supplies.
Information Management: Maintains an accurate, legible, timely and relevant record of patient care that also supports appropriate charge capture (get reimbursed for what we do) and statistical data mining; Communicates information accurately and timely; provides patient and co-workers education. Maintains strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data and complies with HIPAA guidelines and all applicable laws and regulations related to CCA business. Communicates and collaborates effectively with Pharmacist, Front office, and Physicians.
Work Management: Efficiently and effectively completes assignments; demonstrates appropriate priority setting; functions as Lead nurse as assigned; maintains healthy work-life balance by resolving system issues that prevent completion of duties by end of business day Directs daily activities of the medical assistant and assists in the evaluation of his/her performance. Assists with scheduling of required outpatient lab tests, x-rays, and scans, etc. a needed. Performs other clinic related responsibilities as required.
Professional Development: Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for own performance and professional growth; maintains required certification, licensure, and credentialing; attends national conference and shares information obtained with co-workers upon return. Communicates to inpatient staff and referring physicians’ treatment related information as needed. Assists in the instruction of referring physician, and nursing staff regarding radiotherapy/chemotherapy and its side effects. Assists in the orientation and training of co-workers as assigned.
Performance Improvement: Monitors the quality of care based on pre-established outcome-oriented indicators; participates in clinic and corporate performance improvement activities.

Administration:
Must be aware of Cancer Centers of America’s Mission, Vision, Scope of services, various policies & the organogram of the Nursing.
Knowledge regarding the SOPs and clinical protocols of the unit is mandatory.
Participates in the planning, maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies in the unit.
Ensures that the nursing care protocol is followed in rendering nursing care.
Assumes the responsibilities of the Nursing head in his / her absence.
To ensure the completeness and the maintenance of records and reports pertaining to the unit.
To check the completeness of all records maintained by the nurses of the unit every day.
To endorse with her signature when sending the discharged charts to the MRD after discharge.
Interpret the department's policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and accrediting bodies as required.
Supervises non – professional staff in the cleanliness and orderliness of the ward and transportation of the patient.
Identifies and reports occurrences in daily work and participates actively in identifying the root cause.
Implements policies pertaining to patient care in the concerned unit.
Makes suggestions for improving patient care facilities.
Contributes periodically towards updating and incorporating newer protocols.
Attends Nursing management meetings as per the request of the Nursing head.
Ensures that all information discussed in the Nursing Management meeting is passed on to the ground level staff and that confidential information remains secure.
Provides an evaluation and performance appraisal of staff nurses working in the department.
Checks the Inpatient files, records and charts for completeness of the recording and nursing care notes.
Attends Consultant doctor’s rounds whenever required.
Plans the duty schedule for the unit/ward/ICU along with the ward in charge of the unit/ward/ICU, every fortnightly and supplies a copy of the duty schedule to the respective Nursing Head.
Makes necessary changes in the duty schedule both in the ward copy and the master copy in the Nursing Head.
Education:
Acts on request by the Nursing Head to conduct CNE classes.
Updates knowledge with current advances in treatment & care.
Attends continuing educational programs designed to keep abreast of changes in the nursing profession.
Actively involves and plans unit-based teaching-learning for staff nurses of the unit in conjunction with the nurse educator.
Participates in the training of Non-Professional staff in the unit.
Ensures that the patient educational needs are met.
Clinical practice:
Reports to work on time as per shift timings.
Ensures that the supplies are adequate in the ward. Makes an indent from general stores.
Ensures maintenance of the various registers of the wards and units.
Consults and coordinates with the medical team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
Guides the staff nurses of the unit in caring for patients with complicated treatments and care.
Assists the staff nurse of the unit in planning care.
Supervises the staff nurses of the unit during care delivery and throughout the shift.
Provides ward and hospital orientation to the new staff of the unit.
Ensures that all the staff nurses of the unit conduct an initial thorough assessment of every patient upon admission.
Ensures that all the staff nurses of the unit perform ongoing assessment of patients to identify needs and problems.
Ensures that the paramedical services reach patients on time. For example: Physiotherapy, Dietary.
Seeks medical assistance and ensures that it is provided.
Renders comprehensive care to the patient with special attention to the psychological and educational needs.
Acts as a liaison between the patient, family, and hospital personnel as and when required.
Includes family in the care that is planned for the client.
Prepares patients and their family for discharge and home care if any to continue.
Manning the unit by assigning patient based on the hours of nursing care needed.
Monitoring quality of patient care incorporating evidence-based nursing practices within their scope of administration.
Demonstrating caring, comforting, qualities and communicates with an empathetical and individualistic approach.
Developing unit based and competency-based skill matrix and ensuring bed side hands on skills for all levels of staff in their respective areas of practice - Wards/ER, OPD, Peripheral departments/ICU’s/OT.
Ensuring the provision of safe environment in both preventive and promotive aspects for all patients, relatives, and significant others.
Maintaining interdepartmental, inter-unit coordination and communication.
Building error prevention culture and ethical culture among junior nursing supervisors and staff with strict adherence to nursing code of ethics as per Cancer Centers of America Standard Operating Procedures.
Conducting nursing care audits based on Standard Operating Procedures.
Involving in measuring, analysing and interpreting quality indicators, and developing action plan to reach the set target.
Contributing as a committee member in assigned committees.
Maintaining appropriate feedback system both vertical and horizontal without disturbing the morale of the individuals and educate them on the same.
Liaise with consultants and heads of other departments for effective implementation of patient care and minimize errors of omission and commission.
Maintain relevant documents and adhere to established reporting system.
Periodically updating knowledge on clinical and administrative areas, translating them at the bed side and participating in their continuing nursing education.
Contributing to the educational requirement of the staff by doing need analysis.
Maintaining professional decorum at all times and serving as a role model to their staff.
Providing leadership and clinical decision making to all nurses and other members of the unit.
Ensuring adequacy of stock by indenting, maintaining the same, keeping in mind the need for lean practices.
Participating along with the Nursing Head in the need for budgeting.
Maintaining records and establishing adequate reporting with accurate documentation.
Predicting emergency situation and preparing the unit for its smooth function.
Developing problem solving technique and analytical skills.
Participating effectively in hospital infection control policies including hand-washing, bio-medical waste management, cleaning and fumigation protocols, needle-stick injury protocols, spill management, prevention of surgical site infection, prevention of catheter related blood stream infection, prevention of catheter related urinary tract infection, prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, guidelines for nosocomial infections (MRSA, Acinetobacter and so on).
Ensuring safe medication management practices that include drug calculation, IV therapy, drug indenting and administration, prevention of drug errors, monitoring of fridge temperature, look alike and sound alike medications and crash cart maintenance.
Ensuring that all staff have undergone the BLS training, Modified Earning Warning Score (MEWS) training, code blue management.
Ensuring patient safety following patient safety goals including provision of care for the vulnerable patients.
Ensuring prompt assessment of wound site using the Braden Scale, providing appropriate treatment and the practice of complete documenting.
Supporting the CNO in all aspects of quality care and nursing administration.
Note: The Senior Nursing Supervisor assumes responsibility in the absence of the Nursing Head.
